Please see the two pennies that I found and I am looking for advice. Because I am new to this coin collecting game, I need help...LOL.

The first one, as you can see, has a rim, a border, than a black pressure band of some kind, and than the actual penny. On the other end of the front, is a smaller border.

I'm not sure if this is a double die seeing how it's only in the first few letters and not the whole "Liberty"

Why Topic Titles are Important

The title of your topic is very important. Let's say you need help attributing an 1896 Morgan dollar....

You should include the date, mintmark, and the denomination in your titles.

· Horrendous: Help!

· Bad: Need help with coin

· Better: Need help with Morgan Dollar

· Good: Need help with 1896 Morgan Dollar

· Awesome: Need help with VAM on 1896 Morgan Dollar

This enables the members with expertise pertaining to your question to easily find and answer your question. The title of the topic also becomes the title of the topic's web page, which enables us to attract more collectors to the site. The more members we have, the more we learn.

Hard to say for sure without more information. It would help us to know what year and what you are seeing. I'm assuming these two images are of the same coin?

Please include photos of full coin both Obverse and Reverse.
Closeups of the area of concern are good but it doesn't give
any information on the rest of the coin.

Note on the top of the the 'O'? You can see a push mark there from Machine Doubling. The normal strike was completed, but a tap with the dies on the way up damaged the top of that device and the rim at the same time. I know your thinking the area on the top of the 'O' is showing less damage that the rim area. There are no rules when it comes to Machine Doubling. even devices next to each other can be affected differently:

The swing of the dies can be irregular. Even from one strike to the next:

But Machine Doubling is not die doubling. The die that struck your coin was normal. The affected devices were altered after the strike. What you are looking for is Die doubling. This happens during the creation of the die. Thus the term Doubled Die, because the doubling is on the die.

That band may be split plating, fairly common on the zinc cents.

I agree the doubling is MD.
Rest in Peace
