I found this 1995 D LMC and am wondering how this could have happened to the mint mark? I do not believe this is DDD nor is it a plating bubble. Insight please!  Edited by Jim0815

This looks like it could possibly be a counterfeit. I don't like the bubbling in the fields. Show pics of the whole coin.

It's definitely not counterfeit. Some Zinc coins have more of a rougher textured surface than do copper cents. The extension on this mintmark is not a plating bubble as it is solid and cannot be pushed flat, even with a toothpick. But, I am happy to post the obverse and reverse pics of this cent. I believe this genuinely is a mint error.

Me too spruett. I'm sure there is a logical explanation for this. I initially thought Die Deterioration but that doesn't seem to fit as there is no spreading of the device. Edited by Jim0815

Also, Die Deterioration would spread in the opposite direction (toward the rim). The only thing I can think of at the moment is a sneaky die chip. In Memory of Crazyb0 12-26-1951 to 7-27-2020

That thought crossed my mind but there is no break in the extension and the line is seamless. It's just one continuous line. It's not a grease issue, it's not a worn out die as there is no flattening of any of the devises.

I wonder if Wexler would list this one as a UFO.
I'm not sure what caused this either. Die gouge? Die chip? Die abrasion (die trail)? Who knows?

Jim, this is pretty interesting! I would send pictures to John Wexler, to see what he thinks. I'm baffled as well, as I haven't seen this before.

I emailed Mr. Diamond and he said he's never seen anything like it and thinks it may be an extended serif. I also sent Mr. Wexler pics.
