I see is a coin that has high point rubs (which could be a weak strike) but it looks nothing like an uncirculated coin should appear. I am not saying it needs to be white at all, but dirt and debris in protected areas, field disturbances coupled with zero luster says an AU55 grade here would be very generous.

Mike's the expert, but I'm amazed. So I was way low at EF-45, but 62? And if it's truly MS, why not 63? I don't see any meaningful field abrasions or distracting issues.

Coinfrog, that was my thinking in taking the first guess at MS-64. I have a XF-45 1853 half that is considerably more worn than Mike's. I have a 1858 MS-64 quarter that looks a lot like this half. I looked for reasons to grade it lower, but like you, I felt the abrasions and distracting issues weren't there.
I found this coin very difficult to grade, and I have the same problem with most heavily toned original coins. For me, the crustier, the harder.

Grading coins from photos is all but impossible for me which I have definitely proven. After knowing the grade awarded by PCGS it is easier to accept. After all they have the coin in hand. It can be UNC but when you consider Surfaces(dirt and debris in the protected areas), Strike(poor),Luster( dull and lifeless) and Eye Appeal(poor) then you have a coin that is maxed out at MS62. It will be interesting what this coin sells for.
