Poll Question
I've been seeing a lot of nicer grade coins selling under their better grading cousins in different grades, ( ie a ICG AU50 selling for less then a NGC VF35.

Buy the coin and not the holder no matter what grading company slabbed it!

I voted No since I have seen many overgraded labels on slabs from ICG. That being said, it is possible to find a bargain if you buy the coin inside the slab and disregard whatever it says. Many will pass on a coin in an ICG slab simply because it is in one. Sometimes I think that the coin in an ICG slab would fetch more if it were raw. Now this may not be the case for all, most, some or a few. It is just my experience. I haven't seen any undergraded ICG slabbed coins yet.
LATE EDIT: I just went and looked at some. ICG may have upped their game in recent years. I am seeing some agreeable grades on some I looked at. I do see they are quick to bump up to PF70 where I don't think the more popular three would give that grade on modern proofs.

Buy the coin not the holder. I've owned several nice, accurately graded coins in ICG holders over the years. ICG is not a basement slabber.

Buy the coin, not the holder. No matter the reputation of the company. Remember the following , according to the marketrs of the company, was graded by three separate, trained graders. The PCGS website even says they match up the coins with graders who know the series better. Not hard to find more.

ICG is considered somewhat reliable BUT should only be bought sight-seen.

All TPGS's are made up of people. People are not perfect. In fact it is people that mess things up with grading systems. As noted already, buy the coin, not the slab.

I appreciate the TPG's opinion, but it is still an opinion no matter how objective the grader tries to be. Ultimately it is your opinion that matters when you make a purchase. I love building my PCGS graded Ike set, but there is a reason why I have not finished it yet. Finding affordable Ikes where my opinion of the coin matches the grade on the label is not that easy.

ICG is a legitimate company. That said PCGS and NGC are kings for a reason. They're just as good and really better than ANACS is, but most things worth submitting are worth submitting to PCGS or at the very least NGC.

Quote: ICG is a legitimate company... They're just as good and really better than ANACS is And just like ANACS, I am not a fan of their holder. In my opinion PCGS has the best holder and NGC second. The others I would only buy if I needed the coin for my Dansco.

I prefer ANACS over ICG, at least their holder doesn't look like an egg.

ICG is lost in the fog of second-tier graders, along with ANACS, for different reasons. Neither has built a solid reputation of consistency. If you have a coin or note of significant value, don't send it to either.

Completely agree about PCGS, I don't think any of them actually come close at this point. It's the clearest and the best protection. Aside from the white prongs, the NGC holder annoys me that they try and up-charge to be scratch resistant when that should be standard at this point like it is with PCGS. The others definitely can be very good album coin sources Quote: I prefer ANACS over ICG, at least their holder doesn't look like an egg. ANACS is the only holder I can consistently open up with my hands. They're the worst holder by far for the ebay TPGs imo

Quote: the NGC holder annoys me that they try and up-charge to be scratch resistant when that should be standard at this point like it is with PCGS. Wow, did not know that. Seriously, that should not be optional. Quote: ANACS is the only holder I can consistently open up with my hands. I believe it. I have not tried to open one yet, but I have handled a few. A proof set lens feels more secure.

Quote: Wow, did not know that. Seriously, that should not be optional. If you use the express tier or high you get the scratch resistant holder "free". Any lower tiers it's an extra $5 per coin. It should be their standard holder, but their insistence of trying to charge for it is penny wise and dollar foolish in my opinion. Quote: I believe it. I have not tried to open one yet, but I have handled a few. A proof set lens feels more secure. Some of the proof set ones probably are. If you can get into the seem on the back of the ANACS slabs you can usually just pull the entire back off no problem
