AS I was poking around for my 1859, I came across this Prince Edward Island 1855 1 Cent.
I would appreciate any comments on it - gradewise.
Also it appears to be a double date - Was that unusual for that time period?

That's an interesting coin, Whitman, Charlton and Canadian Coin Trends, has nothing on it at all.

I would have to say it must be some kind of token. that the Fisheries or Agriculture put out.

It is a very nice one though, I would say EF+ at least, and it does have some doubling on the 2 fives.

It's a provincial/trade token.

From the jandm.com site: "Before Canada became a country, many provincial government's merchant tokens were used as money. The coins shipped from France and England were insufficient to meet the needs of the colonies.

Tokens were issued and used primarily from 1810 to about 1870."

jandm has one exactly like yours. They say there are many varieties and don't even try to list them all. You can get 5 (their choice) for as little as $19US.

I figured that it was not worth much as is. There was a lot of the token stuff going on in Canada. But I have not come across the 'double date' variety.
I was just curious if anybody else had any info on such an animal(ooops - coin).

The newest Charlton book on colonial tokens lists that variety. I think the new book came out last year or the year before. I cant remember what it says about values.
