1987-P Washington Quarter, (Die Missalignment?)

After several trips to the bank swapping out rolls of quarters looking for the West Point quarter (which my buddy found drastically reducing my odds probably) I ran across this dude & noticed that his ponytail doesn't touch his neck & the double edges on the left side of the coin. That's why I described it as a misalignment I'm still learning all the terminology here.

Looks like a tilted die issue. The fin (on the left side of the rim near the edge) has been flattened. This is common to happen. But when the fin is still thin and tall, those are the ones to save.

is that also why there is such a large gap between the back of his neck and his ponytail

Okay it's apparent that I need to educate myself a little bit more on the process involved in the making of all these coins & the Machines/Presses,etc. so fellas where do I go? when I'm interested in something I get hungry for the 5 W's

Your coin was struck with a die in its VLDS (Very-Late-Die-State). At this point the dis is showing extreme die wear. The issue with the hair is that the die was over polished. When this happens it removes the base of the bust. When it gets this sever, the wider part of the design was wiped away from the die.
