Looking for any information on this coin. My grandfather left it to me. It's a proof he told me.

Bullion coin from South Africa with 1/4 oz of gold. Does not appear to be a proof.

to CCF, Kjless123! I agree with jimbucks that it's the non-proof version. Here's a link with more info on your coin:

So if it's a proof it would be worth $3000?

Those price guides are typically inflated, but yes, it would be worth more if it was a proof. The picture in the provided link is of a proof coin, so compare yours to the picture. Does your have reflective fields (background) with highly contrasted frosty devices (subjects/foreground)? It does not appear so in the picture you provided.

A 1/4 ounce of gold nothing more . Definitely not a Proof Coin.
Any legit dealer will pay 95 to 97 percent of gold value.

Hi Kjless123, Welcome to CCF!

It is MUCH better than my first coin! (A 1964 Kennedy half dollar)

Maybe your grandfather was trying to tell you 1980 is first year of this coin. As everyone said, it doesn't look like a proof coin. It's a nice gold 1/4 troy ounce, nothing else.
