Is it just me, or has the quality of current circulating cents gone down? I picked up a few boxes of 2018-D and 2019-D cents, and there are so many cents with Die Deterioration, trails, tiny die chips on the shield, tiny die cracks on Lincoln's forehead and the shield, etc.
Are they having issues properly treating the dies, softening the planchets, or just running the dies longer than they used to?
I've been out of circulation for a while so I hadn't ever examined the newer cents for varieties. I still have my LP2 2009 rolls to finish going through that have been sitting for 10 years.
Rest in Peace

The entire striking of all the zinc monstrosities is a point of shame, in my opinion.

Why we still make sales tax tokens and call them cents and nickels is a singular stupidity.

I still advocate paying federal taxes with zinc rotted cents.

@moxking, I would not be surprised if zinc lobbyists are one reason you still make the one cent coin.

I posted the same topic a few weeks ago, the last few years the LSC are just terrible. I may stop my Lincoln Cent collection at 2019 as it's not getting any better with the coins being released.

Also the single squeeze process has the profile of the coins with less higher grade coins. Seems like the mint is discouraging coin collecting. They make all the high dollar stuff for the rich collectors, but there is a lot more interest for me as far a proof coins in the pre-70's proofs. The series of different quarters started off good with the states quarters. But now people hardly notice the reverses now days. Just us addicted variety and error collectors show any interest in them. There are a lot of hype YouTube videos and book trying to do one thing. Get an interest going in collecting, but always talking about the lure of how much money you can make on these. Pretty much a hype. Do the collecting for what you can learn and stop worrying about finding a million dollar coin. If you come by it, find. But expecting every 1969-S with Machine Doubling is the big DDO, your just building yourself up for the fall. So enjoy the hobby, and forget the greed.

@hfjacinto - I stopped looking for examples for my album when it ran out of slots. It was a Whitman folder vol 3, so that was about 1994? Anyways, after a point, I only was looking for major issues such as cracks, off center strikes, WAM/CAM varieties. Then, in 2009, I bought some rolls of cents from the US Mint. Soon after, I started hearing about all sorts of DDRs on then and checked one of my packages. I found MANY, and was hooked on varieties after that. I tried to attribute some of them using Wexler numbers, but there are so many, and some are very minor. I have one unopen box of 2009 LP2 cents still.

It may be possible that th mint just really don't care that much about the cent anymore. They know it is a throwaway coin, and it is consuming most of their time and resources. They are going to all this trouble to may these billions of coins just so they can make replacements for them next year.

@Stang, there was enough space in the Dansco to get the 2019 and W proofs in :) and that may be it for LSC for me.

As a long time Lincoln Cent collector, I am very ashamed of the quality, and even cheesy design of the post LMC. I will keep one copy of each, of the Post LMC copper coins. Just to say I have them. If by some chance they remain intact for the next 100 years, they will probably be a very valuable set, as I truly believe a majority of the Zincoln cents will not make it to 2119.
