Help With 1978 Quarter - Coin Community Forum

Davidson Valued Member Nauru 65 Posts	Posted 09/30/2008 9:07 pm I have a 1978 quarter that has (I think a Cud) on the reverse. On the obverse,the Mint mark (I think maybe 'D') does not have a hole in it. Can anybody help confirm if they are errors or not? Pics are here- Report this Post to the Staff

InfiniteInterest Pillar of the Community United States 673 Posts	Posted 09/30/2008 9:27 pm The close up is very small, but appears to show some extra metal there. Probably a die scratch/gouge. A " Cud" is always associated with a die break at the rim of the coin. I believe Coppercoins explains...A " Cud" is always a die crack, but not all die cracks are " Cuds" . This would not be called a " Cud", but many people still call them that. Report this Post to the Staff
coppercoins Pillar of the Community United States 7629 Posts	Posted 09/30/2008 9:28 pm It is a die break on the reverse, but the term Cud applies only to die breaks that take out the edge of the design. Rather than a chip out of the die, it's a piece of the edge of the die that broke completely off. The filled mintmark is normal. Report this Post to the Staff
