It's zinc rotted like heck, but it looks like another image is superimposed on the reverse.

Like you say, it's zinc rotted to heck and that's all it is.

When the plating is split, rot sets in. Just like the salt on the roads on cars back east. You buy a new car and a few short years, it is a rust-bucket. Zinc doesn't like oxygen. It breaks it down. Spender, not a keeper. In time, it will become a copper colored Hershey's kiss wrapper.
