Mossie, the one characteristic can share with you is that I have learned that Machine Doubling looks more flattened out. And meanwhile, double dies look more rounded in appearance. I don't know if this characteristic pertains to all double dies or not, but after studying the differences, this is what I see. I hope this helps a bit.
