Excellent coin @ttkoo! I was wondering if you would have a backup example for this date I believe this is the third Islamic coin with a date in words on this thread (after my 856/1452 and your 818/1415). We'll probably be seeing those a lot more as we continue into the 14th and (especially) 13th century. (If you were wondering, the oldest coin with a numeric Islamic date is from 533 AH (1139 AD) - technically not an Islamic coin, because it was issued by a Christian ruler in Sicily. I sure hope we get that far eventually, but it'll be a while!)

Quote: Excellent coin @ttkoo! I was wondering if you would have a backup example for this date Thanks @j1m. Yes, I had this as a back up, but really wanted to get tdziemia's up first. I have a couple more for the next few years up my sleeve too Quote: I believe this is the third Islamic coin with a date in words on this thread (after my 856/1452 and your 818/1415). We'll probably be seeing those a lot more as we continue into the 14th and (especially) 13th century. What I find interesting is that the engraver would choose to lay out the date in words on a coin where printing space is at a premium, when they could have used their digits and then used the extra room to glorify their leader or their God. Obviously it was done for a reason. Can anyone enlighten me? And I love your optimism now!... 13th century....I think that may be a few more editions in the future!. One can only dream!

Nice examples! Of course I can offer no opinion on tdziemia's example, but ttkoo certainly satisfied the 1378 requirement. Onward we go! We Need - 1377 C. E. (A. H. 779)

Quote: And I love your optimism now!... 13th century....I think that may be a few more editions in the future!. One can only dream! I think we'll get there for sure in the 8th edition if not the 7th... I guess probably not the 6th as well, though it would be hilarious if that happened! Which reminds me, now that we're waiting for 1377, the 7th edition is waiting for 1408, and July had just started, the earliest possible date for the 8th edition to start is currently at July 31st. Realistically it would probably be in August... though honestly with all those stalls, and the possibility of further contribution from JohnConduitt, I wouldn't rule out September. I suspect that for the 8th edition we'll probably need a wholesale revision of the 15th century, too, with as many dates as possible represented by either actual dates (AD, AH, or any other calendar if relevant), or, failing that, datable coins with some good evidence behind them. We want to make it really sure in 2026 that this is legitimately The Walking Back Thread That Reached The Fourteenth Century. (I'm, again, thinking of maybe starting a Walking Back From 1600 With Dated Coins thread in the Ancients subforum that advances each day but allows catch-ups and, at least early on, keeps a listing of the missing dates. It could be a convenient way of figuring out which dates we-as-a-forum would need to patch up somehow for the 8th edition.)

I picked up a 1377 in a recent auction and don't have the coin yet. Duchy of Brabant, vryman (I think valued at 4 groats) struck at Maastricht, March 1377. Witte 409. At the time of writing his book, Witte knew the coin was struck late in the reign of Dukes Wenceslas and Jeanne, but did not date it. Apparently it has since been dated because it is now usually attributed as (1377) or March, 1377. No disrespect to Duke Wenceslas but it looks like he's dressed a bit like a burlesque dancer.

Speaking of the 8th edition. It is not going to happen until tdziemia gets us past 1408.

I think this edition has 4 more years to go (unless someone has a sneaky or two up their sleeve?)

1376 CE (AH 778) Delhi Sultanate billon tanka, Firuz Shah Tughluq, GG# D475 *Approximately 60% of the year 1376 CE fell within the Hirji year of AH 778. As we approach AH 774, that percentage falls until at 774, the ratio for both 1373 A.D. and 1372 A.D. (by my calculations) is below 50%, so that unfortunately may rule out AH 774 from being used in this topic. * This is of course premised on my use of a particular calendar converter. Other converters may give differing results. @january1may, perhaps we could settle on one particular converter for this topic to maintain some consistency? I believe you have given this considerable thought previously. Could you suggest a conversion site that you feel navigates the peculiarities of Julian and Gregorian calendars in the best way?
