@moon, it looks like there is an inscription around the portrait, but I can't quite read the letters with these pics. Can you tell us what it says or else post well-lit, in-focus closeups? Thx.

It is a copy of the impression of the Seal of Charlemagne (Google that phrase to find more examples). The legend around the portrait reads, from the top, "+ XRE PROTEGE CAROLVM REGEM FRANCORVM" (Christ protect Charles, King of the Franks).

Given the very fuzzy details, I assume this is a copy of a copy, rather than an original 1200 year old wax impression.
