I remembered I had a small envelope with some more coins stuffed away in a box with some stamp supplies and now I have yet ANOTHER question: Take a peek at the photos below... Why does my 1974 Kennedy have such a nice shine to it despite having way more wear than, say, the 1994 one next to it? Even the 1968 silver one (which I didn't know I had) has less shine. I read that in 1974 there were no proofs made... is that the case? If so, where did this shine come from? Pocket-wear? ;-)    |

Your 64 is 90% silver, the 74 is clad. Unless its a proof, silver looks a bit duller. Look at my 64 compared to the 66 clad  Edited by mtuma3

Clad as in silver clad? I keep seeing no proofs made for that year but also no mention of any varieties, which is why I am a little confused. Keep in mind I do not have a book to go by, just various sites. Here are two more pics to maybe help:   KEEP IN MIND, no one in my immediate family collected coins, so I'd have no way of obtaining a proof of anything. In fact, I have no idea how I even ended up with these! I think some of the 90s ones actually came in some junk-mail. |

The 1974 has been polished, that isn't its original surface.
And they DID make proofs in 1974, but only in San Francisco and they have an S mintmark above the date between the 9 and 7. You're coin is NOT a proof.
