It all depends on what you consider a nice grade. This whole process is subjective. Your idea of a nice set and someone else's, maybe completely different.
There are so many different variables; dates, budget, eye appeal, timeline, problem free, grades, etc...

Are there no "minimum standards" in collecting coins? I can imagine that it is no use to collect coins if you can barely see anything. And some of the 18th century coins might not be available in a "visible range" if your limit is a few hundred dollars.
Just take a Flowing Hair Half Dime for instance. Even in poor grades, the price will be $500+. But for that amount of money what do you really have: a planchet with a barely visible outline of Liberty. Or take a Chain Large Cent for example. In P1 condition the chain might not even be (clearly) visible. So why spend the $,2000+ on it then?

Side question: Do most of you collect a Dansco 7070 just for fun, or with the objective of selling the entire album for a hefty profit in the future?

For the enjoyment and challenge of accomplishing putting a nice set together. The selling part is up to my kids when they inherit everything. Hopefully they are bit by the coin collecting bug by the time that that happens.
Check out my counterstamped Lincoln Cent collection:

My exact point. There are collectors looking to complete an "entire" 7070 set in PO1. There are also some looking to complete an entire set with "holed" coins.

Well, I didn't do mine for the fun of it. I took it very serious and not for any future profit.

The words "profit" and "coins" are seldom used in the same sentence around here.

Just to note, neither of these is part of the 7070 album - it leaves out some of the early issues so it is not a full "type" set.

G4 is about the lowest grade I'd consider; my preferred was VF or better.

Speaking about an entire set in P1, I read somewhere on CoinWeek there was a famous collector doing just that. I thought it was to ridicule the rare coin market, but maybe he was actually serious about it.

I don't quite understand the high prices of Classic Head Large Cent.
Millions of these coin were minted back in the day. Are they mostly lost to history compared to Draped Bust and Matron/Coronet Head Cents, and are therefore expensive? Or is there relatively more demand for Classic Head Large Cents?

There were around 5m classic head cent struck and almost 13m draped bust cents, making them almost 3x as rare. Not to mention that the attrition rate for classic head cents is much much higher than bust cents.

I went to the LCS and looked at what coins they have. Based on the grades/prices I will try to do most of the coins in MS, but there are a few that I know I won't get in MS. So far everything I have is MS/PF, but these are the low cost items. Looking to do all in a minimun grade of VF. Starting in 2021, I will get a few more expensive items every 2 weeks/month. I have a few I like, nothing yet saved.

So today, I went through all my slabbed coins and put them in the 7070. With what I have, I'm at number 196 on the registry. Looking at the top 50 sets, I doubt I'll ever spend that much, so hoping to crack the top 100 when I'm done. I already found a few coins that meet the requirement but NGC won't accept so I have to figure out how to get those coins added. I also need to add pictures for 2-3 coins that are PCGS that I didn't take pictures of. Once I start in earnest, I start a new post.

hfjacinto,

You should talk to Grapes. He could help finance your habit. If I had his coins and money, I would burn mine!

I'm actually making an in depth video to upload to the forum, I've got assets and photos ready but just have to record the audio lines.
