Woot Woot! Somehow without adding any coins I moved up to 160... GO ME Continuing with the dollar, today we have the Jamestown Comm. Now you may ask why this comm? Answer is simple, it was cheap and had visual appeal. I'm kind of shallow when I collect sometimes

Yesterday I picked a "Trime" but I'm not posting that one yet as 1) I didn't take a photo and 2) I'm mean and like making people wait But if you go to the registry you can see the NGC picture, with the Trime I'm now at 156. WOOT WOOT and 53% complete. I also put 5 coins on hold for the next few weeks, that includes an MS 64 large cent, XF 45 Trade dollar, XF Seated Liberty dime and an XF Capped Bust 50 cent but sadly those will take a while to get. Today we get a modern and the last of the modern dollars

Very nice! I guess we will have to wait on the trime.

Those proofs look fantastic. They almost make me want to include proofs in my registry set (other than the mandatory ones) in place of business strikes.

You may want to share with your wife the VERY interesting story of WHY the U.S. Mint almost immediately had to add the word "CENTS" to the coin! As I'm sure you know, the brand new design of the Liberty nickel looked so VERY similar to the existing $5 Gold Half Eagle, especially since they both had the large "V" on the reverse. As a result, many "enterprising" chaps of the day then just dipped the 1883 Liberty nickel in gold, and then easily passed it off as $5, instead of five cents! That's why the U.S. Mint then hurried to change the dwsign of the nickel to add the word "CENTS".

Hi Steve, The above is a joke, my wife knows how much the coins cost and the Cents/No Cents story. A fellow collector sent me a circulated set of V nickels, only missing 3 and she went with me to get the missing ones so she knows the story. I really do appreciate your input and having a collector of your taste, expertise and caliber follow my collection, I truly appreciate it. In the science world there are greats the Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, Alan Stern. In the Coin World there is DL Hansen, Eliasberg and Winesteven. Thank Steve for continuing to inspire me.

Also the above V nickels are why I take the grades given with a grain of salt. The MS62 coin is more visually pleasing than the MS63 coin. So it isn't all about the grade.

My guess is only three or four of my coins are valued at $10,000 or more, and ALL of those few are in the very low five figures. My league is the one where most of my coins are in the four figures, with many in the three figures. But thanks for the compliment!

@winesteven,
Its not about the money or cost, its about visual appeal. Your coins may not be the most expensive, but you have an eye. Looking through your sets at PCGS there wasn't one coin that I wouldn't be proud to own. So you may not have the most expensive set but you have one of the prettiest.

Wow!! THAT's a true compliment! Thanks so very much!
Once I have 100 posts I'll be allowed to have a "Signature" line, and like you, I'll include a hotlink to that set. But I won't "game the sysrtem" by making tons of posts that are really meaningless to get that count up. I only post when warranted.
One other point - the vast MAJORITY of collectors today prefer coins with toning, as it demonstrates "originality". While I'm OK with some toning, I'm part of the large but silent group that prefers coins with high natural luster, with the coin possibly looking like the mint intended, like it just came off the press. Yes, it was dipped, but dipped gently enough that with my coins, that CAC agrees it was gentle enough to still merit their sticker.
Thanks again!
Steve
