Picked this up on ebay recently, I love the amount of stretching on this coin, one of the further ones I've seen. Dishing looks pretty dramatic too.

Looks like the reverse was struck through a capped die

No, it was struck into a second planchet. This is called a uniface off center strike. The planchet that it was struck onto, went on its own way.

I believe stretch strikes are fairly common among nickels due to the planchet thickness and striking pressure needed for the nickel alloy.

Here's a second uniface stretch strike I got recently on an LMC
