Some of the marks appear to be bag marks and not die chips...some appear to be die chips, though.

An interesting coin! I had been working under the assumption that chips in the die were part of the normal deterioration process and that they would generally occur on later stage dies compared to fresh new ones. However, this example doesn't look like the die had been overly used, so I now a bit confused.
Without sidetracking this thread too far, I wonder if someone could talk about where in the lifetime of a die chips typically form? Thx.

I feel the annealing oven has much to do with what happens to a die durring its working life . The die left too hard would become brittle and chip and crack. A die left too soft would flow and distort.

Very interesting and neat find! That's pretty cool. I wonder if the die was annealed properly?

A wrong tempered die would make it to soft or too brittle. Annealing is done to soften the metal.

Unfortunately, very common on these things. Especially from Philly, like John1 says. The quality control there really stinks! They should relocate all the Philly Mint employees to Denver and move all the Denver Mint employees to Philly. Guaranteed we would see a big difference in QC at Philly.

@zach, first welcome to CCF. Second, best practice is to create a new thread when you have pics ready to upload. Finally, below is a link to the tutorial for uploading pics. I look forward to seeing what you have! https://www.coincommunity.com/forum...g-images.asp
