Whichever they are in TRENDS and C&C, 1938-39-40-51 have been accepted and listed. There are several more to look for. Here's a 1941 (with cameo both sides). On the reverse, there's a semi-circular area in front of the sail from die clash that reflects differently. On the obverse, you can see die lines under D G REX.

I have this weird 1937. I've seen somewhere it described as a crescent moon variety. It's not in great shape and the picture is terrible but you get the idea. I know not the same at all, it just reminded me of it when I saw your pictures. :)

I am going to guess that it is similar to the effect you see on a lot of George V British pennies where for some reason the metal movement from the striking of the obverse causes the bulge on the reverse.

I've seen many coins with "ghosting" causing a similar effect, but that's not what happened here. Just before I started this thread, I had been checking all my Geo. VI dimes for doubling and came across a 1940 dime that has the same semi-circular area, and a die clash line. As more coins were struck, the line would eventually blend in with the field but the slanted area remains and shines differently.

Back to the doubling. Here's a 1942 with the 19 doubled. It also has a bunch of small die cracks and a large one through 10 cents.
