Hi Everyone,

I recently picked up this ANACS 1859 Large Cent MS-62RB for about $300 in a recent auction. On the slab, it just says RPD, without any specific mention of which variety. I looked at coinsandcanada, they looked pretty similar so I was wondering if I could get some help with which specific variety it is?

TIA

Better pictures of obverse and reverse would really help to see markers for certain DP9's it looks like a #2. I don't think it is a #4 its hard to see need bigger picture's and clean view of coin

Yes, a DP#4. About $2000 Cdn in MS-60 in Trends.

Sorry, it's not #4.. Please see my post further down. My fingers were on the keyboard before my eyes and mind kicked in.

Can you take a picture of the 5 and leaf 7 they will tell you if it is a #4. I think the die crack is in the wrong place on leaf 7 to be a #4
I think your coin is a Haxby PC59-22 10 + E12

Well, that's the same one that we designated a #4 in the 2011 Charlton for the Vicky variety. Once it was in Charlton, then Trends and the other TPG's accepted it.. The #4 has a weak D/C at leaf 4 tip and a larger one at leaf 7. It is definitely not a #2. I don't know what Haxby PC59-22 10 + E12 correlates to.

Yes, now that I have looked at his reverse more carefully, it is not a #4. I looked at the 4 #4's that I have, one in XF+, and I see the proper D/C's at 4 & 7 like all #4's have I didn't look closely enough at his posted Reverse. I was just looking at the 9. Sorry, folks. My 9 1/2 in my mouth didn't taste good.

No its not a #2 okie I was guessing. I have been fooled by this coin in the past thinking it was a #4 better pictures would have been better to decide which one it was still a nice DP9 variation

I think that it's p 283 in our Charlton. Still a fairly scarce coin. I have 4 of those as well.

I put 293 when I first posted this answer, but had a typo and hit 9 instead of 8. Fat arthritis fingers don't do well on keyboards.

I agree, it looks like a 10+E12. It's a nice coin!

Okie, I think that one is page 283. The one on 293 is the triple punch #2.

If it's helpful for collectors, I could post a cross reference list with the Haxby numbers for the 1859's listed in the back of the 2011 Charlton. I'll find my list and post those tonight.

Thanks for all the help, I'll try and get pics of the leaves. If its 10 + E12, what exactly does that correspond with? Would that mean it is a DP N9 #4?

It is not the DP N9 #4. The 10+E12 is not as scarce as the #4.

Based on the studies we did for the 1859 N9 rarity ratings. the 10+E12 showed up about twice as often as the DP9 #4 (Haxby 23+E25a).

In a 4,806 coin sample, there were 33 10+E12 and 18 23+E25a.

We put a price on it as $800 Cdn in MS60 in the 2011 Charlton and ICCS and Trends have closely followed with our pricing. It's a neat, well-offset variety and I think that you'd get the best luck with ICCS, since they were involved in out variety section. You'd get your best bang-for-the-buck with ICCS and you can suggest that it's on p283 of the 2011, 65th edition, of Charlton.

Okie, I have the 2013 version, the purple one. I may be talking about the wrong book here but pages 283 are test tokens? The large cents are in the beginning?
I will probably grade it at ICCS. They will just list the variety as 10+E12 right and not a specific numbered DP N9 variety right?
Thanks!
