Excellent coin, and photo. I can even see the AP in the stars on the photo.

I've been away for a while, but I looked at all the acquisitions you've made that I missed. Incredible progress. Congratulations. Quote: That is why the 1901 5 reis is not very easily found in mint state. Quote: The 5 and 10 reis are the easiest and lowest cost to find. Excuse me? You're contradicting each other. Or am I missing something.

Sounds like conditional rarity. Common in lower grades, scarce in higher ones.

They are low cost because there are not so many collectors. Yesterday at the major weekly coin fair here I saw in stock among the sellers only 2 10 reis 1901 in bad shape and one 5 reis 1910 also in bad shape. All cheap, 15€ to 20€ The nice ones are not easy to find on sale but they are not expensive because demand for them is low. Going back to Maria II or Maria I a nice one can go into the hundreds. Near mint state of Maria I I have only ever seen in photos. Some exist.

What JBuck and JECZ said, low grade coins are easy to find, mint state are not and in some cases costly as so few exist in mint state.

On a related note, I have been on the look-out for 75/150/300 silver reis from the Azores from 1794/5/6. Very hard to find in high grades and graded. Any tips? There was one on ebay a year back I hesitated on and it was snagged by someone. Heritage history is very slim as well! Example: https://coins.ha.com/itm/azores/azo...ption-071515

Just discovered this thread. I'll go through it slowly later, but for now here is my contribution. I was thrilled to pick up this 12800 reis in Porto.

....and here is one I just picked up the other day. I collect coins that circulated in Canada and the Americas, which would include the 12800 reis in my previous post. This particular 400 Reis was also rated for circulation in British North America in Queen Anne's 1704 proclamation. Also, my wife is Portuguese, so I have a soft sport for Portuguese coins in general.

Both are very nice coins. If the value stayed the same, the 12800 reis is worth 6 euro cents, if you ever want to sell it, let me know I'll gladly give you 25 cents for it ;)

Nice examples, cedargrove! I love the circulation cameo on the second one.

Just took a picture of my raw coins from Portugal. And while I don't post on here, I have a pretty extensive collection of notes from Portugal also.
