Coin was most definitely altered or damaged. I wonder if it could have been stuck spinning or rolling in something to wear the edge so evenly.

It look as if the rim was removed for some reason. We may never know why, but some folks do strange things to coins..

Removed with a grind stone. Note the rough lines on the edge of the coin. Just a face value coin now.
