Extreme MD? This is the first one of these I have seen. It's almost like "trails" just vary wide.

It doesn't appear to be Machine Doubling, or a doubled die, to me.

having said that, I have no idea what could cause this... :D

edit: upon closer inspection, I do see signs of MD on the reverse lettering. the area that is confusing me is the closeup on united.

It appears to be MD,but not sure The U and N of united does seem like indications of Md

I cannot answer 100% as to what it is, but I can definitely rule out three things: it's NOT a doubled die, it's NOT die wear, and it's NOT Machine Doubling.

What could it be?

A case of die polishing gone wrong.
Die damage of some other fashion.

Thanks for taking a look. I'm glad I wasn't the only one puzzled by it. As I look at it close up it look like the letters N,I and T have shifted or smeared.
