Let's see ...
1. We have ascertained that people on the forum are significantly older than the average age in the U.S.
2. It is also true that the age of classical music lovers is significantly older than the average age
3. Hence statistically, one is more likely to bump into a classical music lover here than other places.

(Never invite an engineer into a discussion )

For the record, I am also a classical music lover (in the broad use of the term). I enjoy everything from early music to romantic era, 20th century not so much with a few of exceptions.

Well I must be some kind of statistical anomaly then as I'm a coin collector and classical music lover in my 20's. I'm into history and I tend to be rather more traditional than most of my peers though.

People's preferences are in particular due to what they have been exposed to at home during their childhood.
With my parents, pop music was "verboten". Only Nana Mouskouri, Edith Piaf, and Simon & Garfunkel were played, in addition to lots of classical music. As a kid I also was dragged to endless amounts of classical concerts and operas.
My interest in collecting coins was fueled in part by our summer trips around Europe (pre-Euro) and the fact that a family friend traveled extensively in Africa and always brought back coins for me.

Sometimes I like to listen to jazz, but it happens very rarely. Of the modern ones, I like Caro Emerald and Hugh Laurie (yes, he is also a musician).

I realized here that I wanted to put in my piggy bank. It is not known if I will ever buy it, but the message here will remind me that I would like to buy it.
1)1999 Rouble Pushkin in slab
2)2001 Rouble 10th Anniv. CIS in slab
3)Obol Pantikapei Bosporan Kingdom of the 4th-3rd centuries BC in slab
Let's stop there for now. It's just my wish list.

Now THAT's an interesting playlist! S&G were the only pop group my parents would tolerate, too.
My dad worked for RCA when I was really young, and I think could buy LPs on the cheap at the company store. His parents had emigrated from Europe, so classical was big for him. My mom sang, and loved show tunes. I still know the words to most 50s Broadway shows (too bad I don;t have a voice like hers).

Back to coins, I think collecting composer coins is a super theme. I was trained in the physical sciences, and have considered collecting coins that honor those figures... but in the end, I always go back to the older coins that I enjoy, so it will never happen.

Mid-year update:

Quote:
1. Get the remainder of the 2022 Canadian circulating commemorative coins I don't have. Get the 2023 circulating coins for both Canada and the U.S.
Yes to the 2022, but nothing yet for 2023 as they still need to release them in Canada and haven't spent much time in the U.S. this year.

Quote:
2. Get the U.S. Native American dollars since 2020.
Did this at the FUN show in Jan. Now I need 2023.

Quote:
3. Look for more medals that fit my collecting interest. Mainly British commemorative.
This has been the main focus this year.

Quote:
4. Pick up some more Canadian Victorian silver coins.
Picked up a few, but starting to question myself on whether to spend money on a well-worn dime/quarter/half or spend the same amount on a beautiful 19th century medal.

Quote:
5. Consider starting a slabbed U.S. coin type set and/or U.S. one dollar type set.
Not something I've looked at.

Quote:
6. Encourage the next generation to get involved in coin collecting.
I did a presentation to my daughter's class at school.

I am still interested in assembling a Dutch Republic Provincial Set of Utrecht (Ducaton, Ducat, Schelling, etc.). I dabbled into it using ungraded coins, but that turned out to be a bad move. From now on I will only consider graded coins,

That's too bad. It's exactly how I would have proceeded. Heritage Europe had a lot of Utrecht material in their last auction. Over 100 silver coins from the Republic, over a dozen ducats. Almost all unslabbed. Silver riders I would not have scoffed at for under 500 (though I know I'm less picky on condition than some other collectors here).

1. Become a bust half wizard.
2. Attend the World's Fair of Money in Pittsburgh show.
3. Write an article for the JRCS Journal.

Just want to give an update. This year has been huge for me in the world of numismatics with regards to both coins and career. It shall continue as I have a JRJ article topic idea for a multi-strike bust half I have acquired. I went to the Pittsburgh show, can check that off the list. Wizardry I am still in training for.
Suffering from bust half fever.

There's a school in the U.K. that specializes.
I think numismatics is taught as part of the alchemy program

John,

You purchased more in 1 quarter than I purchased in a year! Good job!

Thanks jbuck! yes, I'm almost done for this year - but next year, I may slow down a bit - most of my 'catch-up' collecting is done, now I'm onto upgrades. (and my 7070 album.)

And Helder - ya gotta get on the ball and buy, buy, buy!
