I can't tell if this is for plated, gold painted or just great toning. Who would gold plated a coin? What do you think? Weight 5.5g

I believe 5.5 grams is within tolerance of 5.67 grams. Probably just toning maybe?

looks like a yellowed lacquer was applied long ago, perhaps as a protectant.

Try an Acetone soak for a day or over night to see if it comes off.
(Just be sure to use PURE 100% acetone and not fingernail remover (which has impurities in it)

At first I thought it may be one of those gold-plated coins "as seen on TV". But who would plated a circulated quarter for resale? Undoubtedly just discoloration from something in its past travels.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
