Crater, you are not the first and won't be the last to think this. Many think that nickels follow the same rules as U.S. coins like dimes, quarters and halves, that were minted before 1965, they do not. As mentioned above, the only silver nickels were the " War Nickels" and they are 35% silver instead of the 90% silver coins I have mentioned above.
