IndianGoldEagle - here is a 1971 Guernsey halfpenny to go with your penny. Both these coins were issued in such huge quantities in readiness for the adoption of decimal currency in 1971 that there was no need for further coins of these values for several years, by which time the design had been changed to reflect the fact that 'new' pennies were no longer new!

Jersey issued its first decimal coins from 1971 (earlier for 5p, 10p and 50p) to 1980 - they had the shield on the reverse with the three lions, and Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The denomination was in 'New Pence' and the date was in the legend on the reverse. In 1982 Jersey issued a completely new set of coins, with the denomination in 'Pence' and new reverse designs depicting various sites and monuments on the island. These designs remain current today. What is strange, however, is that in 1981 Jersey issued a full set of coins for circulation bearing a revised version of the 1971 reverse, denominated in 'Pence' but with the date split either side of the shield. I can't think why this change of design in 1981 was considered necessary. Did The Royal Mint / States of Jersey Treasury just think "We can make more money out of collectors by issuing new coins in 1981 AND 1982" (perhaps thinking how the Pobjoy Mint was changing the designs of Manx coins every few years and selling silver and platinum proof sets and all sorts of other 'collectables')? Or was the 1981 reverse intended to be permanent, but local islanders found it disappointing and boring so new designs were commissioned for 1982? Perhaps someone on the Forum knows?
