I'm doing a one-per-country set of 19th-century minors, and the example pictured below is on my radar screen for the Great Britain representative. Might I request opinions as to grade and value? Are pennies/ha'pennies of that period relatively available in Mint State?

Lovely coin, I see some very slight wear on the hair otherwise I think this coin would grade at least AU-53. This is an excellent example, MS coins are out there but with this early date hard to come by. Value wise I'd say @$50.

I should mention, it's in an MS62 slab from the TPG I most respect with foreign coins.

Than I would go with that grade, value would be about $100 in that grade.

I'm not sure who you are referring to as a TPG serv. but I am currently putting together a set of Victoria Farthings and Pennies..and the obv are the same and the grading is the same. I personally would question the grading on this one...as echizento said, It appears that there is some wear, very minor on the hair and this would bring about an AU grade..although I would have said a 55, possibly considering the age and strike capabilities, a 58. No higher. Spink lists the penny as 40L in XF and 120L in Unc. Krause is some what higher 75$ in XF and 300$ in unc. hope this helps

I agree with the AU grade...then again I always seem to undergrade. Looks to me like there are some scratches to the left of the shield on the reverse.

I would give it an UNC which is Uncirculated. British coin grading is totally different from the American coin grading system. I don't have the latest Rotographic book, mine is dated 2007 and I can give you the price from there. £110 in that book. Yesterday's exchange rate was £1 = $1.48 and should still be the same today until the currency markets open back up tomorrow. So that would be $162.80 American. I am only a 6p guy but I keep tabs on all the others too.

Taking into account what Irishraider just said...and as I have seen, seems to be very true...this makes me even more curious to know what TPG service gave it the 62. As I understand the rules of the services, they are to be using American standards of grading, not the standards of the coins homeland. and the 09 edition of rotographic lists it at 350 pounds in unc for the reg: variety
