You know, when you think about the business of Third Party Grading, it sure is quite lucrative. Your overhead is mostly office rent and the cost of soft plastic holders and paper Certificates would cost a mere fraction of what is charged on a per / coin grading. HMMMMMMMM makes one wonder why you would want to retire from this business, especially the reputaion and clientele I.C.C.S has developed over the past 30 years! Glenn

glenzy1 this was certainly an interesting topic. I'm heading to the RCNA grading course next Sat and will be meeting Brian Cornwell and hopefully learning a few new things about grading. I will ask him what his plans for the company are.

Hello kniceone, please also ask him about upgrading his antiquated communication and none existing verification methods. Ask him if this is his way of not being accountable for his product. Also please ask him if he is aware of any Forgeries of his flips? will be interesting to find out

The RCNA course was amazing. Learned a whole lot of stuff. Didn't have much time to chat with Brian. Son Scott is very much involved in the grading process. Both look well and healthy so no need to worry on that front.

No doubt they are aware of those questions, HHB. The last show I was at though, the dealer cases were about 90% full of ICCS stuff, and 10% other TPG's. It's not a free pass for ICCS to rest on its' laurels forever, but given the market share, they will manage to get away with ignoring these questions for quite some time yet. I also think that it's important to point out that we may not agree with ICCS policy, the owner certainly deserves some respect for his work and knowledge over the years (I'm talking about the man here, not the company).

ebay and ICCS Saga... Interesting: http://www.coinlink.com/News/commen...ts-auctions/"ICCS specializes in Canadian coins. They are a small company and much to their detriment, they don't even have a web site. In fact, I'm not even sure you could consider then a "certified" Grading company as they do not encapsulate the coins they grade, but rather just put coins in a sealed slips. In any case it is our understanding that they have a very good reputation among Canadian collectors and are highly respected in the niche market they service. It would be nice to see them move into the 21st century and one could certainly make a case for ICCS to be included in an Authorized list on ebay."

I already know of one guy in BC who is "slabbing" his own coins, and another who will be soon. You can order the hard slabs yourself and encapsulate the coins if you wish. These are hard slabs - not the el-cheapo ICCS soft flips. It just goes to show how far behind the game ICCS really is becoming.
The article fails to mention that ICCS coins are also prone to mechanical damage, especially during shipping; another drawback to the soft plastic used.

here is a suggestion. the Europeans are totally against any kind of slabbing. the dealers, and or collectors have grading system in place which is very simple. the grades are similar but not s closely defined. What it boils down to is this: if someone offers a coin for sale a coin as a VF and the buyer does not agree, he simply does NOT buy it, or negotiates a different price. there is a lot more honesty than here. There are also laws that a dealer MUST accept a coin back if the grade or something else is NOT as represented. if the price was more than Euro 40, about $50, the dealer is also obliged to pay the return postage. with this set up, NO TPG's are needed!!! and , some of the collections I have personally seen rival any US or Canadian high end collection. this also has the advantage that one can actually physically touch a coin... there is something to this... and it does eliminate the Ms haggling...

Any chance CCCS could be recognized as an authorized grading company by ebay (US)?

I've wondered that too, CC. However, CCCS also has a soft slab, which may disqualify it.
d23 - what kind of stuff are you sending off to CCCS? I am curious now. If you have anything to sell/trade, we should get together one of these days. Not exactly a lot of shows in this part of the province.

I am preparing about 150 coins to be sent to CCCS. ICCS will get nothing!! coins are anything from VF to high MS. They are all macro photographed in raw state before sending. the list is nearly ready and it contains some nice stuff. However, I have been fortunate enough to have discussions about a new venture which would NOT require the coins to be graded... More perhaps later IF and when the deal is done.It could be as soon as end of next week... H
