Here's another medal from the Hall for Great Americans series - Samuel Morse. The American inventor and painter (b. 1791; d. 1872) developed a long-distance electric telegraph in the late 1830s (rudimentary, short-distance telegraphs existed at the time) and the "dots and dashes" transmission code that bears his name - Morse Code; the code was developed in conjunction with Alfred Vail. (Painting, especially the painting of portraits, was Morse's first career.)

Dipping into the well of Hall of Fame for Great Americans medals, here's one for Peter Cooper. Cooper (b. 1791; d. 1883), was an American inventor who is most remembered - invention wise - for his development of the first successful; steam-powered locomotive in America - for the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad in 1830. It was a demonstration engine vs. being a regular-service locomotive. The engine was nicknamed the "Tom Thumb" because of its small size, but was strong enough to pull a passenger car with B&O Directors (~40) on a demonstration run between Baltimore and Ellicot Mills (present-day Ellicot City) . (Fun Fact: Cooper created a gelatin food product that later developed into Jell-O (R) brand of fruit-flavored gelatin desserts.) The medal's reverse design does not highlight Cooper's industrial inventions/enhancements; it focuses on Cooper's philanthropic efforts and the creation of his Cooper Institute/Union - a tuition-free school in New York open to students of all social, ethnic and religious backgrounds. For more about the B&O Railroad and the "Tom Thumb" locomotive, see: - 1927 B & O Railroad Centennial

Switching to coins vs. medals... Here's an example of the 1951-54 George Washington Carver - Booker T. Washington Memorial Half Dollar. Carver may not have invented the peanut, sweet potato or pecan but he developed hundreds of uses/products for them: 325 for peanuts, 118 for sweet potatoes, 75 for pecans and many others. (Before you ask: Carver did not invent peanut butter.) He also created a mobile classroom/laboratory that was used to explore soil chemistry and teach farmers how best to grow crops such as peanuts, sweet potatoes, soybean and pecans. It is called a Jesup Agricultural Wagon; the wagon is named after Morris Jesup, the New York banker who provided funding to Carver for the wagon's development and construction.

Quote: that rock feature on the reverse - what is its name? My understanding is that the rock feature is an unnamed/artist-imagined cliff/rock formation.
