Quote: I understand and agree with your comment, but I don't buy by grade. I buy by eye appeal and the 1892 actually looks really good for the grade. It's a nice AU coin, the rim ding is small and the cleaning is old and barely noticeable. That's a fair and valid point, and as I say, your opinion of the coin is all that matters. Quote: Looking at the photo above an dignoring the writing on the 2 by 2, can you tell its been cleaned? Judging solely by the photos, I'd be concerned about the rubbing in the fields above the eagle and possibly below the chin / in front of the neck. Also the halo effect around some the stars and letters. But that's just by the photos, and the lighting might be affecting what I'm seeing. Definitely a coin I'd want to examine in person, so I certainly take your word for it. Quote: I'm also conscious of price, the only other 1892 available was actually pretty ugly at 3x the price, so I picked up the one that to me had the best price/appeal ratio. Another good point. I use that logic for my coins too. Again, you're putting together a wonderful set!

I noticed those in the picture also but it's actually an effect of the window in the 2 by 2 Quote: Also the halo effect around some the stars and letters. The halo effect is why I think it was cleaned but it could also be light toning. All the other coins that are cleaned have the reason (like cleaning or scratch) this one only says details, I saw the rim ding and thought that was it, maybe a long ago light cleaning. The LCS owner assumed it was the rim ding, but there was nothing else. This is not a new coin so it could have been in the case for 20+ years and acquired some light toning over time. It's not an AU 58 coin, more like an AU50, so it has light wear. I'm going to get another coin next week and then I'll take a new picture of the album, but I can say it doesn't detract. The 1893 and 1895 I doubt will be AU, the price just jumps too much and I'm not breaking out a $1000 slabbed coin, so those might be XF to keep the cost reasonable and that will be the area that the coins won't be so nice.

The set is looking great, hfjacinto, you're almost there! I'll be interested in seeing what you get for the 1893 and 1895 dated Morgans. If you target XF for those, I agree with CollegeBarbers that it won't take anything away from the overall appearance of the set and it will be a whole lot easier on your wallet!

Lots of Beauties Here.... I am looking Forward to Your 1893, 1894 Choices Too... Funny Fact, When I was starting out collecting Morgans the 1894 was Not a Semi Key. I do not recall the big to-do surrounding Them... PS, No 1895 To Date for Me.....

@Morgan's Dad, the 1894 my local dealer has one in AU 50. I think that might be the one. I started looking for the 1893 and 1895, I checked my usual sources and nothing I liked so I might have to go to ebay. I will buy slabbed just because I'm concerned with counterfeits. I want to keep the coin in the $600-$800 range and for that price I can get a VF35 to XF40. I'll go for eye appeal. I haven't ruled out getting a higher grade details coin if it has no hairlines or the cleaning is old (market acceptable), but an original coin is my first choice.
