Hello all! New member here with a question. I just picked up a couple of 2024 Kennedy half dollars (clad circulation strikes). One is a D mint (almost proof-like) and the other a P. The P mint has an unusual feature: there are streaks of copper showing in several places on the obverse (not just on the rim but in the fields as well). I have examined hundreds of clad Kennedy halfs in the past 2024-Kennedy-Half-With-Copper-Streaksand have never seen this before. Is this just a poorly struck coin? Or is this a known issue on these new releases? If so it's too bad because I did pay a premium for them even though they're really only worth face.

I know, hard to see in the photos, but these streaks are the exact color of the copper on the clad rim and are all over the obverse ( when magnified.can only see with the naked eye once you know they are there).

I see it. I wonder if the clad layer is just super thin in that area that makes the copper show through?

It seems more likely that there is a bit of copper in the cupronickel surface. It's composed of 75% copper, 25% nickel, after all. Another possibility is that it was exposed to acid or another chemical that brought copper to the surface, selectively removed the nickel, or stained the metal a coppery color.

I like the poor alloy mix in the clad layer explanation.

The cladding is comprised of 75% copper, and sometimes under certain conditions, the copper can migrate to the surface.

Alloy mix of clad layer isn't perfect on this coin. Shows light areas of copper color. It happens.
