I recently purchased this coin. I attempted to search the internet for similar coins so I could determine if my purchase was a wise one. I can not find another example of one that only says "Repunched Date" on the label. I would appreciate answers to the questions below to help me better understand my coin 1. Are RPD considered VAM varieties or is it a one time occurrence? 2. Does the RPD designation on the slab add value? 3. What exactly makes this a repunched date? I would appreciate any clarification. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Nice coin. You could go to Vamworld for the 1880 S, use the sort by date option, see if you can find a match. http://ec2-18-221-104-31.us-east-2..../1880-S_VAMsSome VAM varieties add a little more value, the major errors have higher premiums. You could check sold prices on ebay, see if you can find an example there to compare. PCGS and NGC show some varieties listed, but they only do the major ones I think.

You can reduce your search on Vamworld by first determine which S you have, large or medium. Then look through all the doubled date listings to find a match. You don't have a Top 100 variety there so probably not much added value for doubled date. The fun part is doing the research to attribute what you have! Good luck!

There are a few repunched date listings on Vamworld.com, Vams 8 through 12.2. in medium and large S. Pretty minor indicators. I couldn't see a match. You could post it on Vamworld, more Morgan collectors there. Could be an unpublished variety or sometimes grading companies ID it wrong, maybe doubled date but not repunched.
I recently bought a PCGS silver Libertad, 1993 but they labeled it a 2010!! It's pics are on PCGS.

Normally, ANACS will not put a descriptor like RPD on the holder if it not significant and obvious to the graders. Think hot lips that the sender doesn't ask for attribution. ANACS will likely say something on the holder like doubled obverse while not calling it a hot lips. I would suggest searching the 1880-S VAMs on Vamworld in the Top 100, Hot 50 and Hit List 40 coins.

I did additional research to determine the VAM number. (VAMWORLD) I am thinking it is either a VAM -31 or 32. (the exact obverse die was used for both vams) One determining factor was the "zero" having a notch at its top. https://www.vamworld.com/wiki/1880-S_VAM-31
