I know there are several of you who are dedicated ASE collectors. I commend your efforts.

Help me to understand what constitutes a complete ASE set.

For the moment I'm asking you too exclude any TPG label tricks such as 'First Strike", 'Early Release", "Signed By" or other assorted marketing tricks that give multiple collectables for the same basic coin.

If you had one of each ASE minted (all finishes included) - what would be in that set?

Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

Morning David,

Great Topic....

If a person collected the Full American Silver Eagles Set one Would have to Include The American Eagle 10Th Anniversary Set Proof Bullion Coins 4-Coin Set, Which has the Only way a person Could have The 1995-West Point Proof American Silver Eagle Coin, If they are a Original package collector.

People collect what they Will, In My Personal Belief, A Full Set of ASE's , Should have Every Single U S Mint Marked Variety s, Including All Uncirculated, Enhanced Uncirculated, Proof, Reverse Proof, Enhanced Proof, Enhanced Reverse Proof, WW2 Privy marked Proof, And Burnished, ( mint jargon for Uncirculated :).

Thats a Tidy Membership Listing. Not to mention the Bullion Examples, I think This is a Very Full listing, I am forgetting a Few Releases I Am Sure....

Thanks for The Topic, I believe there are Many Resident American Silver Eagles Collectors Here that Will confirm and possibly add Its a Huge undertaking, Also mention those Here that Have put together 3- Complete Dated Series to date, WOW.....

Edited to say, If they are a Original Package Collector.

How high is up?

Seriously, go out to the TPG of your choice and browse their definitions in their registry.

Or define your own.

It's your collection, you make your rules!

for me, a 'complete' ASE collection would have to include every Proof and uncirculated one from 1986 to present - to include the 'elites' that Mike stated (including the 1995-W proof too) but for some that cannot afford the 2 'kings' of the series, I would not consider it a 'non-complete' set.
But for me the complete set also includes a Bullion ASE from every year as well.

Why would I have to have the 5 Coin 10th Anny Eagle set issued in 1995 if all I wanted / needed to complete my set is the 1995 -W ASE proof ?
I'm on the verge of completing my ASE "set" and as BStrauss3 points out, it's my collection, so it's my rules
My set includes: single coins -- UNC, Proof -- in their OGP; raw coins (Bullion); OGP Sets ( 2011 25th Anny 5 Coin Set is one example); TPG slabbed coins (which include some bullion, burnished, and proof coins), and many of the multi-coin sets ( the SF and WP two coin sets from 2012 & 2013, and others) still in their OPG.
Through the end of 2024, my list showed 58 distinct mint marked proofs in the series, which includes the Rev Prf, Enh Rev Prf, and WWII privy variations; as of year end, I had 57 of 58. On the bullion front, I have at least one from each year in the series. I'm aware there are years where multiple mints struck bullion coins; my choice is not to chase down all of them. This Coin Week article from June, 2022, is a helpful reference for ASE Bullion hunters: https://coinweek.com/bullion-silver...m-beginning/

I admire and respect the ASE collectors with 100% slabbed or 100% OGP collections (and their time and effort to share photos of their collections on the CCF ). ASE's are addicting (and expensive !)

Hello CAPT,

I mentioned 1995-W 4 coin set, Only because IF a person would seek all OGP, Like I do, That my fellow ASE collecting Friend is the Only way to receive the 1995-w in All Original Packing, the 10TH Anniversary Sets OGP......

I will be the First to say, Collect what You may. The only rules are placed by ourselves.....

A person Could get a slabbed 1995-W Proof, It will Not come with All Original Packing.

We are a Very passionate bunch, I Apologize, For @ times I am Very easily EXCITED....

You know I'd weigh in sooner or later ;-).
It seems like you're asking more for opinions than facts.
It's not too hard to find out what's been offered over the years. A bullion every year. Yes sometimes more than one mint made them in certain years, but you don't seem worried about that. Since the mint made one privy billion now, and probably more to come, you'd almost want to have one of every one, but that's more of a variety than a "finish". Probably add to the list the Uncirculated 2008 rev of 2007, again the only accidental variety (I'd stop short of calling, what is it, 45,000 examples, an "error". So with the bullion, privy, and variety out of the way, then it comes down to all the proof, Uncirculated, and special finishes. I think it's probably all fairly documented what you'd need for a complete set.
I agree with the statement about the 1995W, no one says you need the whole 10th Anniversary set.
Myself I'm lucky I had the resources to come up with the whole set. I hate to see a set broken up. Most people obtaining just the ASE will probably end up with it graded. Many collectors would probably wonder about the authenticity of a raw 1995W, but less so about a complete set.

My problem has revolved around that. But with the US Mint. I have all the sets they ever put out and all the individual issues. So I have ASEs where they existed in several sets in a given year. So if they offered for example the 2017S in both the Congrats set and Limited Edition Silver Proof set, I have them both. And also like I mentioned the 10th Anniversary set, I have that complete set.
It's my passion. I also have a few sets that The Royal Mint produced with silver eagles in them. I really think I have them all, but you never know.

TinyRetreat,

The Morgan silver dollar Series is a Fantastic adventure in U S Coinage since 1878-1921 and Re-struck in 2021, a Real 100th Anniversary.. The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace dollars, by Leroy C. Van Allen & A. George Mallis, 4TH Edition, It Really Helps with the History You'll Need and Want. The Most collected U S Silver Dollar in History....

The Variations in the American Silver Eagles Series is Another U S Coinage that took the Silver collectors in America to Heart, We Love ASE's.

The ASE series is Best Fully understood with a Research Factual Pictorial guide. I with the Help of Some Very Passionate ASE collectors Here refer to The American Silver Eagles, A guide to the U S Bullion Coin Program, 4th Edition, by John M. Mercanti, Chief Engraver, United States Mint . ( retired ).

I hope this Helps, Research is Key to Knowledge in Numismatics, Best Wishes, MD.

David,

Did the reply s help, or complicate....

Did you learn anything about What is a complete American Silver Eagle Set, ....

Just as in the Classic Commemoratives of the 1930's, The listed releases are a full complete list of Every Mint marked examples. Not Every Commemorative collector collects Every Single Offering, Some collect as they Please.....

I suppose the nomenclature collectors use varies as much as a Collector's goals for a series. The American Silver Eagles Bullion Program started in 1986,

I am a Full series offered collector, Some are not.

I am a Original Packaged collector, Some are not.

Some collect Slabbed examples, Some collect Only slabbed examples.

Some collect any portion of a series they desire.

Some Just Bullion. Some Only mint marked offerings.

Some collect Every offered Option for the Exact same coin, Some do Not.

The Original package examples, In My Opinion, Are going to Hold or command a Special value Along with Place in History, They are Not an Unlimited source, ...

There is a Full Complete ASE guide that lists Every Single Mint Marked, and Bullion release offered, The American Silver Eagles bullion program, I listed it Above, Where the options are All Listed to the 2021 editions......

The ASE series is an Exciting Modern Example in Designs of " days gone bye " that are still available Today.....

The NGC Registry has categories for Silver eagles, in proof, burnished, and bullion. https://www.ngccoin.com/registry/co...llion-coins/ I would think one or more of the Registry categories would provide a 'complete list' of silver eagles. I collect certified silver eagles in 69 and 70 grades and have all except the proof 95-W.

I made a Checklist for all variations, this includes the different Mints for bullion strikes that are only identifiable from TPGs from 2011 to now. There may be errors, apologies if that is the case.
