one with St Paul with a nimbus (minted 1716) and this one without minted in 1715.

Yikes! I wonder if the engraver lost his job (or his head).

In American English we call it a halo.

If you go to the top of page 3, or the bottom of page 6, you'll see the more usual 18th century representation of Paul with his halo. But those were coins from "the provinces" so maybe they were a bit more cavalier about such things in Rome?

My next addition is this Clement X ND (1670-1676) 1 Grosso showing St Paul Standing with upright sword in right hand. In this instance St Paul does have a halo or nimbus

A new add. A bit worn but I got it for pennies and it must have had a interesting life.

Clement XII ND (1735) 1 Giulio.

The legend "ABVNDET IN GLORIAM DEI" (May it abound to the glory of God) is a biblical reference from 2 Corinthians 4:15.

The only world coins I can get for pennies are things that tourists to Costa Rica and the Bahamas bring back and wind up in the foreign coin bin at my LCS.

Thanks for explaining the inscription. We probably could have a thread just on biblical quotes. The popes don't have a lock on that; the Spanish and Habsburg royals also used them liberally.
