It is one of those types which is rather rare but not valuable (I always find that lesson interesting). Muntoni 40. Here is one of only two auction sales I could find: https://www.numisbids.com/sale/4062/lot/?lot=1426And yes, not yet in Numista. (you seem to have a knack for finding them! )

Quote: Have you been bitten by the OFER (One From Every Reign) bug, or just coincidence? Yes... and no. I tend to buy coins that I find interesting for a variety of reasons. If the right coin came along that was a new pope for me I'd definitely be interested - though factors such as condition, design, historical relevance and cost come into play - particularly the latter at the moment - so I wouldn't be obsessive about it. I'll see about adding it to Numista - thanks for confirming it's not there. Searching for older coins on there can be a little hit and miss at times and I find I have to try a number of ways. Older coins don't always lend themselves to the neat searching categories.

yeah, Numista is very particular on their searches - must be exact or nothing shows up.

In this case, since we knew it was papal, I went to that section in Numista and searched on "Paul II". The very first coin that comes up is a quattrino of Ancona with the exact same design as Bacchus' coin except for the lettering reverse around St. Peter. So that was a good indication it coud be a quattrino. Scrolling down to coins from the Rome mint, it was quickly clear it wasn't there.
I agree searches can be difficult if you've got less to go on, though there is now an image search feature that helps.

Another pick-up that I can't find on Numista Clement X - 1675 1 Grosso - with quite an unusual "5". Obverse legend - CLEM X PONT MAX Reverse legend - APERVIT . ET . CLAVSIT; Closed holy door There's a version with a bust of Clement X as the obverse there https://en.numista.com/46537 but not one with the crossed Keys atop the coat of arms obverse. There is a quattrino with both sides - but not a grosso - https://en.numista.com/463174 *** edited by Staff to remove the () from the first link and a period at the end of the second link to ensure that it works properly. ***

Looks like the engraver punched the 5 upside down. Roma has it as a half grosso: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=10896100. I can only find a couple of examples on acsearch. It's now been submitted to Numista (if you already did that, let me know and I'll cancel mine). (Edit: It turns out this guy struck seven differnt types of half grosso! )

not sure if the 5 is upside down or not, the image on Numista looks very similar.
@ Bacc, I fixed the links in your latest post to ensure they go to the proper location.

I can confirm that the weight of this coin is 0.71g Quote: It's now been submitted to Numista many thanks - I hadn't done that yet as I'm never quite sure if I've just not found it with my searches. Quote: I can confirm that the weight of this coin is 0.71g Definitely a half grosso. Numista had nothing smaller than a grosso for this pope at the Rome mint (as you saw). I submitted 5 half grossos including yours, all with different designs. It turns up there was only 1 listing on acsearch, in lower grade than yours. I used photos of that coin, so you could probably get yours accepted as the "plate coin" once the listing is up.

Quote: I submitted 5 half grossos including yours, all with different designs. Oh wow - It must have been a blind spot during earlier additions. I'll wait and see what the reference is like and then submit mine if it shows better detail. Great that this thread is helping improve Numista. I've been spending some time on my Papal States page - see below link if anyone wants to give it a quick look. I've converted it from HTML1 to HTML5 and redesigned it a bit - including "interesting" historical notes for each entry. I'm still editing those which is quite time-consuming as between Papal States and Vatican city there are now over 500 coins..

Another Pope ticked of my list that doesn't really exist. Julius III (1550-1555) ND (1550-1555) half Groschen IVLIVS PP TERTIVS Julius III sitting on throne, holding a long cross dividing legend. ALEX FAR C LEGA AVE Cross with keys in each quarter. (The reverse legend names Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the powerful legate who governed Avignon on behalf of Rome) This one is on numista but the example there is quite worn so I might see about uploading pictures from this one https://numista.com/268236
