I have a few small Ziploc™ bags of junk silver (two bags of very worn Roosevelt dimes, one bag of very worn Mercury dimes, and one bag of War Nickels) that I inherited from my father a few years ago. All the valuable dates and coins in good condition have been separated out, and what remains really is junk from a numismatic standpoint. I will be attending my yearly coin show in July and I was thinking of bringing the bags with me to see if I could get a decent price for them. I'm just wondering whether I am better off trying to sort all the coins and put them in tubes or just offer to let the dealer weigh the entire bags and offer me a price based solely on current silver value. I really don't want to bother with all the sorting if it's not actually going to get me any more for them. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If its junk, IMO by weight. But why not try to sell here on CC before the venue? You have plenty of time plus stackers here might be interested.

Thanks for the feedback, coin rejector! I have updated my original post with some more accurate information (instead of relying on my imperfect recollection) and a picture of the actual coins. As you can see, we're talking a lot of coins here, and I'm assuming the weight would be too much to try and sell online due to shipping costs.

I didn't realize the amount, which puts it into perspective. Therefore, due to the quantity (if it were me) I think I'd be more inclined to sell in bulk @ said venue. That being said, maybe a roll or two here in the CC Member Sales area would probably go quick & make someone happy.

Out of curiosity, what do each of the bags weigh?

Don't most people list by face value? Weight feels prone to precision/error.

All right, I couldn't weigh the individual bags on the bathroom scale, but the three bags of dimes combined weighed in at 20.5 pounds and the total weight including the nickels came to 27 pounds (meaning the nickels weighed 6.5 pounds). Not sure how accurate those readings are, but it feels about right.

Monument Bullion has a great price on junk silver for the weekend. Best Ive seen in awhile. Rolls of 40 quarters or 100 dimes for $239.66. 10+ for $236. Right about spot. Unfortunately I have $255 floating out from Heros for junk or I would have loaded up much more. I have about $4,500 spent on metal in the mail, and collectables, and just can't spend any more but this is a great price. Get in on it. I love junk silver. https://monumentmetals.com/tube-of-...rnalId=pzRcr

Thanks to all for the advice and information! I ended up bringing the three bags of dimes last week to the annual coin show I attend each year and found a dealer willing to giver me just under 26x face value for them. He actually had coin counting machine and was able to quickly verify the number of dimes I had, so that was easy enough. All together I had just over $360 in face value and got around $9300 (which I then used to buy a couple of collectible coins, including an MS64 921 Peace dollar).

Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

That roll of 40 "10 face" quarters" that went for $239.66 is now going for $273.06 and even that is a pretty good deal. On 30 May 2025 silver was going for $33 oz and now look at it "$38.30 oz". And monument has the best junk silver prices out there so forgetaboutit being beat by anyone. "If only" I bought a $100 bag of 90% junk quarters and halves. And the thing was ? I knew at the time it was THE time to make such a move but instead I just had to buy the flashy Libertads, Philharmonics, MSDs, Maples, ASLs, Germania's, Britannias, Koo Koo's....ect. If I had 1/2 a brain I'd buy nothing but 90% junk and 10 oz bars. Oh I do buy junk and I do buy 10 oz bars but I just can't help myself when it comes to buying the "pretty" stuff and the "collectable" stuff. I try to balance it out but I'm just not trying hard enough. I think it was my wall that ruined me but what the heck ? Thats been a lifelong passion. The first 50 years of the 20'th century is a story that must never be forgotten. But I do have to buckle down now and for the rest of the summer focus more on investing then collecting. Right after this $500 collecting splurge I went on today.
