According to Coin News, https://www.coinnews.net/2026/03/16...-coin-68380/, collectors wanting to keep their gold collections up to date are going to have to pay up. This is based on the mints $5,100 to $5,149 per ounce pricing range. I have not bought gold from the mint since 2016 and was eyeing up the special coins for this year's "Best of the Mint" Series. The Mint's "Best of the Mint" program recreates several of the most iconic American coin designs in gold paired with silver medals. These sets were created specifically for America's semiquincentennial celebration and include: 1916-W Mercury dime Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set — June 4 — $875 1916-W Standing Liberty quarter Dollar Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set — Summer — $1,790 1916-W Walking Liberty half dollar Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set — Summer — $3,300 1804-W Silver Dollar Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set — Summer — $6,290 1907-W Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set — Fall — $6,290 If released today, collectors pursuing all five of these sets would spend $18,545. Add in another couple grand for silver issues and you are well north of $70K (and that does not include the new Trump coin). How many of these coins are going to end up being extreme rarities because nobody bought them?

Up until this year I've more or less looked at it from the realistic business perspective when their prices changed year to year. When they now ask $124.50 (plus shipping without a subscription) for the standard uncirculated set, I'm done. There is absolutely no justification across the board. Especially when comparing the Canadian silver products, which are cheaper per ounce and vary, even lowering on a few And the gold? $11,040 for the ASE 4-coin compared to the same Canadian Maple leaf set at $8,777.92 USD. And you get an imbeded diamond in the one ounce!

I have to buy the two proof mint sets because I have to buy the two proof mint sets. I have to buy the uncirculated mint set because since 2019 that is how I have stayed current with my modern collection. I cannot risk not finding them in circulation, especially the Denver issues. I know they are price gouging, but there is nothing I can do.

That total includes both the 4 coin American Eagle set and each individual coin. I haven't every really seen any US Mint gold coin sell for a lot more than spot to justify paying the premium to buy these Someone mentioned that there was a reverse proof gold eagle so I checked ebay and could have bought one for $5214 which was about $100 more than spot

No gold, but I used to subscribe to quite a few things that I cut out due to the insane price increases. I'm keeping Mint Sets because I collect them, intact. And for years now, I've been buying two; one for the collection and one to cannibalize. But, 2026 may be the last year of that collection. I'm also likely to buy more than two this years. I'm keeping my two item subscription to the American Innovation Dollars, for the same reason. Uncertain about the Mint's plans for the future of this program, but I'll keep going as long as they do. Due to the SemiQ issues, this year I may include the Kennedy 2-Roll Set, and the US Proof Set (iffy due to price). No gold or silver issues, thank you, although I was a former silver subscriber. Price jacks have forced me to drop them. In the past 20 years I have bought two gold issues from the US Mint, a gold 2014 Kennedy, and a 1/10 oz Gold Eagle. I no longer own either of those.

Quote:I'm keeping my two item subscription to the American Innovation Dollars, I have kept mine for both proof sets. Even though the regular proof set is apparently donezo, the subscription is still active. I know that does not mean anything, as the AWQ subs are also still active. But in case they reverse course, I would like to get one.

If I can't ride or drive it no way could I justify $68,000 - especially in overpriced Gold (Bullion) coins.

I noticed I'm buying less and less each year from the Mint.

It was essentially the same as the 3 coin ASE set, proof, Uncirculated and Reverse Proof. So what makes the Enhanced Uncirculated gold eagle special is it's the first time since 2006 that there has been a special finish on a gold eagle. I did acquire the 3 coin gold eagle set and am pretty happy with how it's appreciated in value. I guess it all depends on timing. Maybe someday we'll look back and think how cheap these sets this year were.

That nearly $69,000 price tag has just been blown out of the water with the announcement of the planned Trump 1776/2026 gold coin the President approved last week. As usual, he wants something "bigger and better" so he's probably asking for a 5 ounce gold coin. This 2026 gold issue could easily top out over 100k$ before everything is said and done! Crazy!
