Terry, you seem to know the SeatedNut fairly well don't you? Well, I haven't noticed him around these here parts in a spell, and there was something that I have been meaning to ask him, but I keep forgetting to ask when he does show, so I'll ask you now.....His user name has intrigued me.....he is not confined to a wheelchair is he? I met a vamming kinda guy about a year ago who was, (and was also sort of a nut), and I can't remember if his name was Dave or Mike.
Edited to add: If you do read this stuff Nut, I am only trying to flush you out. It is more fun with you in the mix here.

Uh oh, awkward for me (again). I was just thinking about how it takes all kinds to make a situation fun (fun for me anyway), I think of you Oz, as being always polite and kind, Gene is sometimes incoherent, but always a great guy to pal around with. The SeatedNut is just mysteriously aloof and always correct. I am usually rude and tacky, (but serious in my miscalculations). And then there is our Mod....he puts up with an awful lot from me (as we all know that I dance on the edge more than necessary). Russ isn't around near enough either, I really like his sense of humor (I think)....

Zee, could metal fatigue combined with harmonics account for a lot damage to dies that we see? I don't think anyone of that era would have understood that repeated tonal pitch could shatter metal.

What are you talking about?

You are talking over my head Terry. I don't understand it either. I could possibly see how 'repeated tonal pitch' may enhance an inherent weakness in a die and 'possibly' accelerate a crack, but to cause the pitting thing is a bit beyond my comprehension. I actually believe that repetitive stress loads are what causes fatigue to the point of failure (like cracks), but you may well be onto something there, I am just not smart enough to know.

I was always curious why the New Orleans mint always seemed to have the most failures. I attributted that to older equipment, but anytime you have equipment clanking out coins at the rate of ninety a minute, you have the potential for harmonics. I believe the type of failure would have been a rotational axis failure. This might account for the clash episodes. So what parts were prone to fail on the coining press?
I am free thinking this as I type. What do you think?

I still believe that the biggest problem with the O mint was management / supervision. Do you want a list of parts that I think would have worn to cause what sort of problems? Most any moving part is subject to failure, even parts that don't move like the friction plate is subject to wear, but I really don't think that machinery was the enemy here.
