While mintages of PL dollars for 1954 and later are in common catalogs, is there a reliable source for earlier PL dollar mintages, 1950-15 and perhaps 1959?
Thanks,
Steve

There are no mintage figures for PL coins from 1950-1951. In fact, figures from 1952 to 1958 are only estimates. They are based on sales figures (to sundry persons) in the mint reports. Those sales could also include some MS coins. Also, PL coins did not start being made until 1954. Any coins graded as PL prior to that year are essentially flukes of the minting process, and are only labeled as PL due to their finish (and not their method of manufacture).

chadcoins, the answer should be in the RCM reports of the period. I have read them but that has been a few years ago now so I can't remember the details.

Hi MKB,
There are enough full 1953 sets graded PL by ICCS that I think they must have been made intentionally and not been merely random select individual coins.

Steve, I just checked my 2007 ICCS Population Report, and the amount of 1953 PL coins graded listed is (No Cameo, Cameo, HC and UHC):
1c - 47 5c - 63 10c - 43 25c - 34 50c - 72 $1 - 71
Then in 1954, the numbers rise dramatically:
1c - 329 5c - 361 10c - 354 25c - 344 50c - 338 $1 - 523
The ICCS numbers as of 2007 indicate a maximum of 34 sets of 1953 PL coins are possible by means of ICCS graded coins (assuming no resubmittals) compared to a maximum of 329 sets in 1954. This is about a 10 fold increase from 1953 to 1954, although "Sundry Sales" were about twice as much in 1953 (about a max of 15,779 sets that could have been sold) compared to 1954 (about a max of 7,426 sets that could have been sold).
Numbers like this confirm the mintage of PL coins began in 1954.

Hi MKB, I have 2 1953 sets that made it through ICCS complete as PL sets which were submitted complete in the original cardboard/ cellophane holders. I am aware of (but do not own) a third set. That would seem to confirm that sets were prepared as sets by the mint in 1953. RCM records indicate that 1,200 PL dollars were prepared in 1953 but does not indicate how many were issued as sets or sold individually. Thanks, Steve
