Peter,
I suspect you are right. There were 306 million minted in 2006 and 200m in 2009.

Hi Guys, I just stumbled onto this forum. It's good to see I'm not the only 1972 5 cent tragic around. I was told in 1977 to start collecting them, so I did. 346 coins later, I'm still looking

We just went through $50 of 5c, there were 30 odd pre 1980 coins and 1 1972, the first we've found. There was also a Canadian 5c and 10c.

I found it's almost like a drug. I decided to put them in coin trays, each holds 99, so I did the first, had a couple of extra coins, did another, had a couple of extras again, etc etc. I am on my 4th tray, I would like to do 5, because there is a 5 tray carry case available, but then, what if I find more?
Prices are getting ridiculous on ebay. I also do the $20 5c bags from the banks, but it is getting hard.
I have a few UNC, and proof. I kick myself for not going high enough for the mint roll that went through on ebay

No doubt you'll come to a logical conclusion to continue with your OCD.

At least they're small and don't take too much space.

Are there any other coins that you 'obsess' about?

'Obsess' about? Would we call it an obsession? I would call it more of a......well....desperate need to fulfill a desire that we can't seem to control. But it ISN'T an obsession. Really.

according to Dr Phil -
is it illegal ?
does it jeopardize your health, your employment, or your relationships ?
if "No" to all of the above, then it's harmless, and the biggest label you can hang on it is "fetish".
Dr Phil understands collectors.

No, this is my lot with coins. "thank God" says my wife.
But then, I collect Chinese stamps too, which is as bad. "I'm losing my sanity" says my wife

recently concluded internet auction:
described as -
1972 AUSTRALIA 5 CENTS UNCIRCULATED
Item number: 130495189966
Ended 15 Mar, 2011
Bid history: 6 bids
Winning bid: AU $22.05
COMMENT: This coin was stored "raw" in a plastic page by a previous owner.
In consequence it has lost most of its original mint bloom.

noodle, noodle, noodle: keep on noodling !

Peter I checked the annual reports from the min, and the number of 5 cents for 2009 were 52.478 million. That is from the second half of 2009, contained in the 09-10 report. No 2009 coins were minted in the first half of 2009.
