Wow...the fact that you found it in a non-collector's accumulation makes it more likely, I think, in that they didn't buy it. Assumably, they got it in change or something at some point; it's not likely someone would have seeded it in public, even if it was a fake.

I think its a fake, I'll give you 20 bucks for it. ha ha Seriously though I agree given the coins it was found with and where you found is in your favor, so is it yours or the family members? Man that's like winning the lottery.

From everything I see, this appears to be a very nice and authentic 1916D Mercury dime. You definitely now need to have it authenticated (as everyone else has said). SWEET find!! I really really hope for you that this is a true one. It's gorgeous! Good Luck!

I am incredibly jealous! I have dreamed of such a find since I first started collecting Mercury dimes. Congrats and I hope it comes back as genuine if/when you get it graded...it's beautiful!

Another option for you is ANACS. It will cost about $50 to ship it to them with appropriate insurance but you won't have to join. Figure $100 total and if it's genuine - $10,000 coin minimum! [& that's if it comes back AU!]

I'll join the bandwagon ..... pay the money to insure and ship the coin to PCSG (or the grader of your choice) ...... let them authenticate ....
Keep us posted on what happens.

I emailed a local dealer I found on the ANA website. I'm going to try and get a local opinion first. If the opinion is that it is legit, I will probably send it to PCGS (PCGS will probably cost more, but wouldn't that most likely give me the best sale price later on?)

Yes, PCGS will give you a higher sale price than any of the other TPG's.

Definitely professional appraisal is required, a road trip to a show that has PCGS or NGC on site would be worth the effort.
