Look at the State Quarters they are running out of ideas to put on the back of them I bet for alaska there gonna put a fishing trawly and its motto will be "Good ol' fishing and those new dollar coin who is going to buy a picture of Hilary clinton and a gold coin that makes me go seriously And thats my rant of the month tahnk for hearing me out

You have to remember that the nickel design had been around since 1938 without change and the quarter had been around since 1932 (not including two years of bicentennial issues) without a change other than metal content. Those issues were getting old and boring! I believe that the Louisiana Purchase 200th Anniversary truly did deserve special recognition considering the fact that it doubled the size of the US at the time and finally connected the Atlantic US to the Pacific. Plus I got to attend the First Day of Issue ceremony in St. Louis for the Peace Medal nickel I really have to disagree on the issue of State Quarters "running out of ideas"- IMO this years designs are the best yet, very original scenic references with no state outlines . The dollar coins are another matter though. Some Presidents dont really belong on any type of coinage (William Henry Harrison- the 30 day president, etc.) The First Ladies in gold is bad as well. Only a handful of First Ladies have done anything of historical significance, many are complete unknowns.

Are you on a roll today CJ? My, my! Now remember there are a lot of folks that are really enjoying the changes in some of the coins. It looks like you'll probably collect older coinage and be a little more traditional in your collection - am I right? I agree with biokemist6. The Lousiana Purchase did indeed deserve recognition and First Day Issues are a nice collection, even if you don't like them, they are a nice addition and not too costly. Mint sets also. My jury is still out on the Presidents coins. We'll see what they look like. A First Day issue maybe. As for the First Ladies...there may be a couple of special ones that have shown an historical contribution to the United States - Eleanor Roosevelt showed great strength behind her Presidential Husband and his foresight for historical recognitions (Parks and so forth). Mamie Eisenhower was a "popular" First Lady. Jackie Kennedy has also been well remembered. No matter what their Politics, these are historical figures. Maybe recognition on a coin that will be circulated for years would not have been a good idea but, as a Commemorative we'll see. The State Quarters have been a wonderful learning experience for young and old. By studying the coins the learned experience are the dates that the States obtained Statehood and their contribution as well to our Country. As for Alaska, keep in mind the Klondike Gold Rush and it's historical significance. Sorry that I went on a bit. History is one of my many passions and I love to pass on some of the knowledge that I've gathered over the years.

Hi Buffaloboy I think dsking has made a good point, if the current circulation coinage doesn't do it for you, then find a classic type coin that does. But the reality of it is that the westward journey nickels, SQ's and the ever loving Presidential dollar coins will supply and have supplied an immediate collector increase, this can in reality only be healthy for the hobby,, as the SQ program ends , many of these collectors will continue further into the hobby by collecting the classics(supply and Demand) has been the life blood of coin collecting and will continue to be well into the future . How do you know he wasn't kidding? About the barber. I thought it was funny.
Buffaloboy: In my opinion, having opinions is a fruitful thing, especially when you test them by telling them to others. At the risk of sounding patronizing, at your age, developing the habit of having opinions is far more important than most of the actual opinions one has, no matter what anybody says. Your opinions will change as you get older. Nobody escapes that.
But I'm guessing you're smarter than you let on. I expect you're aware, at some level, of the irony of calling what you wrote a "rant." It's an old trick. Preface your opinions by calling them irrational: it automatically apologizes for what follows (rants are, by definition, irrational), and so blunts criticism. Plus, if you let go of that term ("rant") and the idea behind it, your opinions have to be more careful, like your grammar, because opinions always attract criticism, which is an excellent state of things, if you ask me.
I agree with Dan about the grammar. It doesn't have to be the Queen's English; you just have to learn how not to distract readers with lazy spelling and sloppy word-chains that only pretend to be sentences. Reading your posts sometimes feels like walking through a minefield. Of course, message boards aren't supposed to be bastions of English rhetoric. But you have to be clear. Even when you're being complicated.

Always a very good policy! quote: Originally posted by Buffaloboy5 I'm very good at grammer. I'm one of the best writers in class(when I take my time like right now). I know why Barber coin are called Barber coins.
Thank you for the exlanation, and I never for one minute thought you were that stupid. Sometime it pays to slack off and not try so hard to call attention to oneself. If you know what I mean! Slow it down and learn from any of these people who are here to help and make your collecting practices a little more refined.

I love reading all of your posts... Buffaloboy, I wish that I had your energy and enthusiasm. I'm very surprised; however, that the new coinage doesn't get you going. When I was your age, we had no changes in the change and it wasn't near as refreshing as with these recent changes. I agree with you though, that the mint makes changes "erratically'. I can't understand the new nickels either. Why do we need Monticello again...And, why is Jefferson looking at us like that? I'm glad you guys brought up the subject of English. I thought that I was the only one that still cared about that. I'm always blown away by the horrible English (not foreignors but English speakers) used on ebay and steer clear away from "Freaky English"

You know though ( I can testify to the fact that bad grammer and speach does not always imply ignorance, lack of intelligence, etc
