Found this coin while digging through my change jar. The edges look like they've been pounded down on both sides, but some of the writing on the edge still shows through (especially on "In God We Trust".

Also on the back it looks like some sort of die crack.

I'm really new to collecting, would someone be able to tell what kind of error this is / if it would be valuable to keep, or is it junk.

Thanks.

to the forum!

The top of the reverse looks like a lamination error and if the coin were in better condition would definitely be collectable. I don't know about the obverse. It does look like post mint damage, but even if it's not, I don't think the coin is in good enough shape to be worth any more than a nickel.

I could be wrong, wait on another opinion or two.

Your nickel has fallen victim to the dreaded laundromat dryer. Coins get stuck in the fins of commercial clothes dryers and tumble for weeks or months until the dryer is serviced. The constant rolling action causes the coin to repeatedly hit against the steel drum which folds and rounds the edges of the coin. Rough, beat-up surfaces are also a tell tale sign of dryer damage.

bio, is that a lamination on the reverse? Or part of the dryer damage?

Dryers

Looks like a lamination. It's as if the damage uncovered a deeper later of a defect.

None of this is lamination. If left in the fins long enough, the rim most likely would curl over to cover the lamination like areas.
