Hello all,

My Grandfather retired as "Portiere" (custodian) of the Bank of Italy in Rome in 1969. As a retirement gift, he received three commemorative coins from the "Assemblea Annuale 31- v- 1969". This is printed on the back of the coins.

The coins weigh about 7 ozs total and it's time to sell them. My question is whether they have any "collectible" value or just the value of the gold.

Thanks for your help.

Sincere regards,
Jessica in Upstate NY's Catskill mountains.

Hi Jeskat and to the forum

of course there is some amount of collectible value, for those particulary interested in that thread.

However, it would be nice to start valuation on the coin's base metal value first, that is, the amount of real gold in the total of 7oz

Perhaps there is an authenticated certificate for these coins, as to their actual gold content? Bullion gold and some gold coins have it's weight and purity clearly shown on the coin or bar, there is no mention of that on these coins.

Thanks for sharing!

Hello Nic,
Thanks for replying. I don't have a certificate of authenticity. I was thinking of bringing them to a jeweler for appraisal. Do you suggest doing that? My father says they are 22k. Would that translate to 90%?
If there indeed is more value for a collector, how do I go about selling these pieces?
Jessica

Thanks again for your generous help.

Greeting Jessica,

I saw your post from 2010 on the 3 Italian coins ( metals )
Assemblea Annuale 31- v- 1969
I too have the same 3 coins in my possession. They are my friends coins given to his father at the same conference.

Questions:
Did you confirm their gold content / katatage ?

Do they have a collector value over the gold ?

Any suggestions on who will buy them / where did you sell yours ?

Thank you

Sorry, but the original poster hasn't been on the forum since 2010, so I doubt you would get any reply.

The problem is, collector demand would be very low - so I'd expect value to be basically the bullion value.

I will move this thread to the Exonumia forum where it belongs (since it is a "medal", rather than a "coin"; this will send Jessica an automatic e-mail and perhaps get her attention - assuming she's kept the same e-mail address for the past 12 years.

Thank you.....
My biggest question is confirming karatage.
Short of melting these coins.....and then assay....
Who might be familiar with these.
Thx

I think the best place to sell a total of 7 onces of gold medals would be
at specialist numismatic public auction, in Europe, most possibly in Italy..
I doubt that they would get any more than gold value in the US, after the actual gold weight is known.
