I received 2 Proof sets from the mint and I can't believe how bad the ATB Quarters are in them. The weakness of detail in Washingtons hair is terrible. What a ripoff.

Is this like the ones they sell on the Late-night infomercials? They were selling ICG-slabbed Proof 70 ASE last night for $79 + 9.95 S&H, is that a good deal?

I sent my 2010 Proof Cent back for a replacement due to quality issues with the Presidential dollars. First time I've ever had to do that. It's like they don't even look at them before they send them out. I guess maybe they don't...disappointing for sure!

One of my Lincoln's has a smudge in the "mirrored field". I seriously think they are actively trying to get us to quit buying from them.

I can't tell from the photo, Itrooper, but remember that they changed the hair design for the ATB.

The 'weakness' in Washington's hair lines (compared to the 1999-2009 Quarters) is intentional. It's supposed to be a return to the 1932-style obverse.
You'll readily notice the difference if you hold a BU business strike 1999-2009 Quarter obverse next to its 2010 counterpart.
Of course, a lot of people don't like the 'etched' style dies of the 2009 Proof Quarters, and now add the weaker hair lines of the 2010 design to the 'etched' die, and we have a real -uh- "winner" here, folks.
The weak hair line design looks a lot better on the business strike and Satin Finish coins. (I have a Mint Set, the Silver Proof Quarter Set and the issued "D" business strikes.)

Thanks for the information! I had no idea it was a "design choice". I still think it's ugly, but intentional ugliness is in the eye of the beholder.

When someone like me gets a 2010 Silver Proof Quarter Set, and then thinks "This obverse looks so much better on the business strikes", you have to wonder what the Mint was thinking...

this is not good, my mint set is setting in the PO box, oh well it won't be the first one I have sent back if the quality is bad.
But it maybe the last one I buy on the subscription, maybe if enough people drop the subscriptions they will get the picture.

I know a girl that works at the mint fulfillment center in Plainfield, IN. They are not "Mint employees", they work for Pitney Bowes who is contracted by the mint to do the fulfillment of phone and online orders. According to her they all hate their jobs because they are treated without respect and are not allowed to make suggestions to make things better. They must follow government working procedures that are overly cumbersome and meaningless. They see the problems with the quality but Pitney Bowes is in such hot water with the Mint that they are told to just ship it out in order to make daily shipping quotas. Quality is definitely NOT job one. As to why your order takes so long to get to you... gold sales are the top priority. Gold goes before anything else.

Something tells me itrooper is too young to remember the era before "spaghetti hair".

I just saw one of these sets tonight. The reverses are sharp and nicely designed (unlike the committee design of many of the State Quarter reverses). The obverse of the quarters ... what were they thinking? FAIL! This looks like a refugee from a soap dish.
