wow.
The best part is hes upfront, realistic, and is one of the few auctions of this caliber that I could actually consider. (you know.. assuming I could even come close to affording it.. )
Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

kind of surprised he didn't take more time to take better pics. Still, simply amazing

I have dealt with this seller awhile back and was very pleased. I don't think I would take all those pictures either, a list would be all thats needed when you are talking about a massive collection like this. As he said if you need to see anything specific and are serious about buying it he would take specific pictures, but his list lists grades and company with VAM designation for each coin so not sure why you would need to see pictures because they are still the discovery coin no matter how they look and that is what makes this a aww inspiring collection, not the grade of the coins

I'll just need to replenish my petty cash fund.
I would not care how many recommendations he has. I'd still like to see them before the sale. You're crazy if you don't.

It's way out side of my Pay Grade !! I am sure anyone that would buy that set would fly and see it before, I know I would. The info he posted is just a base line to review, kind of like a home listing. If it was just one coin up for sale I could see posting very good photo's of "the coin"

yeah I am sure anyone who would be interested in this would have no problem flying in to view the coins in person and work out a price both could live with. he said he had some "top pop" coins in his collection for certain VAM's that wasn't in this lot and when that someone goes to see them they may just make an offer on those as well and get all the coins with one price. I just saw all those discovery pieces and thought it was amazing to see all of those in 1 lot

....and I just glad to be able to afford getting some old mint sets. "Sigh", so that's how the other 90% live!

He's a notorious overestimator of rarity/value, one of the dealers we're talking about when we discuss how dealer self-interest is harming VAMming.
With that said, this is quite a collection.

the coins I purchased from him a couple years ago, I knew what they were so that never came into play with my situation.

Quote: this is an amazing collection as far as thinking about how much research has been put into this Yes, it is, but that is about all I would consider it. This person has spent a lot of time and money searching for "discoveries" (for what reason, only he knows). "Discoveries" are most cherished by the finder. I really don't see where much added value should be perceived to discoveries of subtle clashes on previously designated vams. This guy is prouder of his collection than that collection should be coveted by anyone else. This auction would serve as motivation to some to get out there and hunt, while it might be a reality check to others. 'Discoveries' are cheapened by the fact that they are common occurrences.
