Hi. Need some help with this coin. I'm pretty sure that it says "M Avrel Antoni" on the side with the head. What is it on the other side? Is it a fish or not(I guess not but what is it)? I have had a lot of theorys but I can't solve this on my own.
Knowing the size would be useful. I am guessing that it is somewhere in the 21mm size range. The size will allow identification of the denomination and if my guess is correct then it is a diassarion. It is a Roman provincial coin, which is a coin produced under the reign of a Roman emperor but in the Greek speaking Roman empire. In this case the coin comes from Stobi in Macedonia. The emperor in question is Caracalla with the obverse legend being M AVRE ANTONI. The reverse legend is MVNICIP STOBENS and what you see as a fish is the skirt of Nike advancing right with wreath and palm.
I'm realy impressed with your knowledge. When did Caracalla reign?
I will be showing more coins as I'm not a collector in the same way as most, I just buy them because I think it's fantastic to own coins wich is that old...
