Quote: Impaired proofs are very cool. Indeed. I always enjoy seeing them more than silver. They have the more resistant path to circulation.

So this past week of Quarter searching was the opposite of my recent trends... 3,280 quarters searched brought no Ws nor silver... so next week can't get any worse lol.

I actually decided to stop buying full boxes of coins this year for a few reasons... Primarily because the last two boxes of Nickels I bought last year were complete duds and I was not having much luck with boxes prior to that. Also, because I found I was having much better success with Dimes from customer rolls as opposed to bankwrapped rolls. I only have bought one box this year and that one was only because the teller made the suggestion after I was "only" going to get a half-box... on a whim I said "ok" and wound up with a 1939 Doubled Monticello Jefferson for my troubles lol... it was in the second from the bottom row in the box, so it was a very good thing I took that box! My preference this year has been to get half-boxes or 10 rolls at a time of coins from my main banks and then I go back if said group was fruitful (i.e.: pick up the rest of said box or another group of 10 rolls or more)... it's actually produced much better results for me than just getting lots of boxes.

I can sympathize, John77. This past week I went through four straight boxes of mixed CWR and MWR with nothing to show for it. Luckily my last two boxes produced a Marsh-Billings W, a Salt River W, and a 1964 P and D. My per-box average for Ws has drifted from 0.87 in early 2022 to 1.08 today, which I sort of expected, but is nonetheless unwelcome.
CWR dimes are excellent, but I have mixed feelings on CWR for quarters. In my experience, they are frequently short, and too often contain all pre-2019 coins. On the other hand, I found 14 silvers in four CWR in January, and a box of uniformly rolled CWR this spring with coins rolled circa 2021 produced 5 gorgeous Ws. So is it just my poor memory and irritation with short rolls, or is there really a difference between CWR and MWR?
To get at this question, about three months ago I began separating my quarter finds into my five main sources: CWR, Brinks, Titan (a local MWR distributor), quarters from a local laundromat chain, and quarters from $1k bags from a vending company. When I hit 400 boxes (I'm at 365 now) I'll post results, but so far MWR have a slight and probably insignificant edge on CWR, while laundromat coins are also highly productive.

Yes I have noticed W's are getting more scarce in boxes before I paused my searching. Congrats on all your finds. Hope to start up searching again in the next couple of months.

TomM, I love that you're doing this research... As for short CWR quarter rolls, it really seems branch dependent - I have a scale I bring with me to branches where I've been shorted in the past with CWR of quarters, dimes, and nickels... actually had a bad experience with a manager at one branch several months ago because the teller kept handing me rolls of nickels which were a coin short and I refused them, of course... I haven't seen said manager since so maybe she got a talking to or something worse... ----- 800 CWR quarters bought from my favorite teller and searched on Wednesday brought me this neat 2008-S Alaska proof!
