Gotta go for a while... I really like it when there is lots of spontaneous replying going on, but something else is going on in town, and I just cannot miss it....(I'm still kinda young).

I am looking at the Super CD book and it states the 17A was a result of 6 separate clashings. I thought maybe it showed that slash on the "7" in the book and may have been why I took that picture but I didn't see it so I have no idea why I took that particular shot

Well, I firmly believe that anyone who is attempting to calculate die states between two or more coins should be looking into the devices (not the fields).... This is only common sense (IMO).

That little stuff in the devices cannot be polished away.... virtually anything in the field can be, and the lack of polishing lines and a PL finish are not indicative of a die that has never been polished.

I'm guessing a lot of die state progressions will remain a mystery to those who actually understand, or only be explained by luck.

Can we theorize that a strike of given quality will/should remain so throughout the life of a given die? If so, progression might be tracked through wear of known die markers in protected areas of the die. This would leave the hair and cotton bolls as more important features than we might otherwise think.

That is my fervent belief Dave... cotton bolls and hair, letters and wings, dates and tail feathers are all devices of textured topography, and will exhibit the various nuances of the die that they were struck from.... I feel that the devices are subject to less strike pressure than are the die fields, and as such will wear at a reduced rate....(in addition to natural immunity from polishing).... It would take some relatively strong magnification, but I think that the devices are the real key to die states.

Awwhh, just call in and tell them that you are taking the day off... and you want to see if they are able to handle it without you for a change.

60x would do it. Heck, I can come close just with the camera.

I do show a couple 1878-S VAM-17's in the SDB but not sure which one. I woke up today very sick and feel like I have gotten the flu or something so it will be a few days before I get out to see if I can find them. Today its dayquil and nightquil. Once I do I guess I should start its own thread so the people trying to learn can do so in this thread without being caught up in our madness. I will say I asked these questions on another forum in 2006 and was told it wasn't worth looking at in a round about way and I am not one to argue about what I believe and since everyone was in the arguing mood about it I just dropped it and moved on still believing my own theory and let them believe theirs

There is no hurry in digging up the 17 thing (especially while you are sick..)... Have you already checked you B1s for that little 7 in the Y like the v-85 has? (That might be an interesting thing to do while you are recuperating)....I hope that you will be feeling better very soon...

on the 85 the 7 is in the A not the Y. There is no other B1's in my collection that has this feature

Okay.... well, I feel pretty stupid.... When I read that statement a few minutes ago, I thought to myself "okay, so the 7 is on the A instead of the Y... big deal... what difference does that make?..... if it is on the 85 obverse, it should be on the obverse of any coin that the 85 shares its obverse with". (I had to look for the A on the obverse of a Morgan for a reality check).....
